Abstract
The advanced medical directive, are written or verbal instructions prepared by
someone competent regarding the assistance or suspension of medical care in
case of illness where one is incapable of pronouncing his own will (Neves et al.,
2010).
In the present study, the question to this investigation is centered in knowing in
what manner will the construction of a model of advanced medical directives
contribute in a better management of health care units?
To accomplishment this it was necessary to effectuate a bibliographical
research on the main concepts and state of the knowledge that contributed to
the definition of the objectives in the empirical study:
After researching the main concepts described in the biographical
documentation, we defined the following empirical goals:
To create a knowledge base concerning advanced medical directives as
well as the creation of a model to determine its acceptability in health
care units within Portugal.
Identify the active roles in the implementation of this process.
As for the study of the advanced medical directives in Portugal, and especially
in health care units, an exploratory and descriptive methodology was adopted,
to identify the main characteristics and developments being investigated in this
area.
The main conclusion is that, although there are some initiatives within a politic
level, society in general is not yet awakened to this problematic, bay be the
reason for the absence of clear politics regarding health care units.
