Abstract
The goal of the article was to discuss the use of groups as a powerful device to offer hospitality, to produce care and to promote health in oncology, using Constructionism and Social Poetics as the theoretical framework. This is a qualitative research with observant participation that studied the Pre-radiotherapy Psychological Support Group for women in the Hospital do Câncer II, part of the Instituto Nacional de Câncer José Alencar Gomes da Silva (INCA), in Rio de Janeiro, between June and August 2018. Four groups were selected, with a total of 20 participants, all undergoing gynecological cancer treatment (for cervical and endometrial cancer). The results showed that the strengths of working with groups were: more collective care, amplifying strategies and resources, embracing suffering, valuing different experiences, collective conversations and plural voices. Support groups are valuable clinical and political tools to be further explored in health and oncology practices and research.
