O Uso do Exame Citopatológico na Prevenção do Câncer de Boca

Abstract

Com a alta incidência de câncer de boca e poucos estudos publicados no Brasil sobre o tema de diagnóstico de câncer oral por meio de citologia, este estudo tem por objetivo a divulgação do exame citopatológico oral na prevenção do câncer de lábio e do interior da cavidade oral, tendo em vista que a implantação ao longo dos anos de novas técnicas mostrou que o exame tem uma alta sensibilidade e especificidade para a detecção de carcinoma de células escamosas oral. O uso do exame citopatológico oral na boca com uma maior frequência pelos profissionais de saúde bucal não tem como finalidade substituir o exame anatomopatológico que é considerado o padrão ouro no diagnóstico definitivo do câncer de boca, mas ser usado como mais uma estratégia para um melhor prognóstico e redução da mortalidade do câncer de boca. Esse interesse é pelo fato do exame citopatológico oral ser simples, barato, pouco invasivo e sem dor, sendo bem aceito pelos pacientes, tendo assim vantagens em relação ao exame histológico. A utilização do exame citopatológico oral permitiria diminuir o intervalo entre a identificação de uma lesão suspeita e a confirmação diagnóstica.

With the high incidence of oral cancer and few studies published in Brazil on the topic of diagnosis of oral cancer by means of cytology, this study has the objective the dissemination of the oral cytopathological examination in the prevention of lip cancer and the oral cavity, considering that the implantation over the years of new techniques has shown that the examination has a high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma. The use of oral cytopathological examination in the mouth with a higher frequency by oral health professionals is not intended to replace the anatomopathological examination that is considered the gold standard in the definitive diagnosis of oral cancer, but to be used as another strategy for a better prognosis and mortality of oral cancer. This interest is due to the fact that oral cytopathological examination is simple, inexpensive, non-invasive and pain-free, and is well accepted by patients, thus having advantages over histological examination. The use of oral cytopathological examination would reduce the interval between the identification of a suspected lesion and the diagnostic confirmation.
